But like all machines, CNC machines also have their own flaws. You can rectify some flaws without much technical expertise. However, some others require trained professionals for their rectification.

What are the common CNC machine failures?

  • Programming errors

One of the major causes of CNC machines' failure is programming errors. To overcome this problem, it is essential to have adequate staff who are well-trained in all aspects of programming. New machine operators should be provided with proper training and manuals to control the operation of the machine. 

  • Lack of maintenance

CNC machines come with a lot of parts that are in continuous motion. Thus, it should be cleaned and maintained regularly to ensure non-failure. Non-maintenance of the machine can result in the build-up of dirt, eventually leading to machine failure. 


Machine operators should follow a maintenance schedule that ensures the machine is cleaned regularly. You should also check the level of coolant for its uninterrupted and smooth operation. 

  • Lack of skilled operators

The human brain is behind every machine. CNC machine tools are run by operators with specialised skills. These operators can only optimise the yield from these machines with the proper skill that is up to date. 


To overcome this problem, you should recruit operators who can visualise the various machine processes and use the correct tools. Writing the correct program is also crucial for this role. These operators should attend refresher courses to keep them abreast of the latest in this field. 

  • Problem with the power supply

For efficient functioning, CNC machine tools require an optimum power supply. In the absence of this, they may not work properly. 


Sometimes, the machine and power socket may be incompatible, resulting in a low power supply. You should ensure that the correct power and voltage are provided from the input side of the machine. If the power or voltage is low, you should ensure that it is provided at the right level. You should consult certified electricians to overcome this problem. 

  • Overheating of the machine

Some CNC machines may overheat with temperatures touching 150 degrees. Overheating can affect its normal functioning and the result you get. This can be due to the high volume or long duration of work. Sometimes, environmental factors like wind or air draft from doors or windows can also result in overheating of the machine. 


To overcome this problem, you should clean the machine regularly. Ensure the machine is free from dust, dirt, and soil. If wind or air draft is the issue, ensure proper air circulation to maintain the optimum temperature. You can also use a spindle with oil-jet lubrication or air-oil lubrication and manage overheating.  

  • Using wrong tools

Appropriate cutting tools are essential to complete a machine run. Without this, there can be damage to the finished product, like rough edges and burn marks. If the tool is blunt or an improper feed speed ratio is selected, it can result in a poor material finish. 


Choosing the appropriate tool is the only way to overcome this problem. You should understand the parameter for various tools and select the tools accordingly.
